Well, maybe not, but at least we're gonna stop executing teenagers!
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday it is against the constitution to execute killers who were under 18 years old when they committed their crimes.
The 5-4 decision affects 19 states that carry out the practice and wipes out the death sentences of about 70 murderers.
It means states cannot make 16- and 17-year-olds eligible for execution. The court had already ruled against executing people 15 years and under.
The court said that the execution of juvenile murderers violated the constitution's eighth amendment, which bans cruel and unusual punishment. The same argument was cited in 2002, when the justices banned executions of people who were mentally retarded.
