So, there have been several rock musicals coming out in the last few years, yes? That is, rock musicals using the songs of a band and wrapping a plot around them. So, first we had "Mama Mia", featuring the music of ABBA. Currently, in San Francisco, "Movin' Out" is playing, with songs by Billy Joel.
But that's not all that's coming.
When we were in London a couple of weeks ago, we passed posters advertising: a Queen musical and a Rod Stewart musical. Yes. Not making it up. I swear.
Before you read further, would you like a chance to guess what they're called?
O.K., ready?
The Queen musical: "We Will Rock You".(It would have been awesome if they'd called that one "Mama Mia" too, or "Scaramouche, Scaramouche! Will You Do the Fandango?" but nobody asked my opinion.)
The Rod Stewart Musical: "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" No, I'm just kidding. It's actually called "Tonight's the Night." Which is a shame, because now if Neil Young wants to come out with a musical, he can't call his "Tonight's the Night", despite also having a song of that title. Oh, but I forgot, he already came out with a musical, "Greendale." But I digress.
And yes, the Rod Stewart one has "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Hot Legs" in it. Oy...
The weirdest part of all? Comic writer Ben Elton (The Young Ones) wrote the book for both of them. What's up with that?
What’s next I ask? Are we to get "bad boys - the Wham musical" or "Ruby Tuesday the Rolling Stones musical" or a story about a girl who runs off to New York to discover her dreams and find that life is like a virgin ( the Madonna Musical) LOL
Me, I'm holding out for "Cynically Yours: The Amy Rigby Musical" or "Papa Was a Rodeo: The Magnetic Fields Musical" (Bonus points if you know who they are!)
